Exercise
My name is Linda Draper. When my doctor diagnosed me with Parkinson’s, he recommended that I start exercising to improve my strength and balance. I also learned that regular exercise may help slow the progression of my symptoms and improve the quality of my life.
To get moving, I joined the YMCA. I shared with a trainer that I have Parkinson’s. She suggested a group cycling class because it helps build muscle and strength. I didn’t think I would like indoor cycling, but I discovered it’s safer because it keeps me away from cars and runners. I love cycling because I feel stronger and fitter than I did before my Parkinson’s diagnosis.
My goal is to return to hiking and walking through parks with my husband. I stopped because of scary trips and falls that I’ve experienced.
Fortunately, I’m on the right path to start walking fast again. I completed a physical therapy program that trains people with Parkinson’s how to improve their balance and flexibility while walking.
I’ve become an advocate for moving. I’m searching for more physical activities I enjoy doing and will share them with other people with Parkinson’s.
