Physical Therapy

My name is Jennifer Marino. I am a physical therapist who has been practicing in the Baton Rouge area for the past 11 years. I have been certified in the LSVT BIG program for six years.

When working on my doctorate in physical therapy, one of my professors conducted Parkison’s research through Brooks Rehab in Jacksonville, Florida. We helped with the walking portion of her research in our class. During this time, I learned about LSVT BIG and saw firsthand how people who received cues to move bigger were able to correct physical issues they had been struggling with daily.

Physical therapy helps someone with Parkinson’s Disease improve and maintain strength and mobility. Parkinson’s disease is progressive in nature, but there are multiple studies that suggest physical therapy through programs like LSVT BIG can slow its progression.

My mission in treating people with Parkinson’s is to help improve daily functional tasks and maintain independence for as long as possible. I have worked with people on tying the fastener on a loaf of bread, walking with a bowl of gumbo in a crowded room, standing up more efficiently, and applying fine motor skills such as fastening buttons and using zippers.

It’s rewarding to see how practicing small actions turns into big movements. I love the moments when my patients gain confidence in doing things that help them achieve a more functional and independent lifestyle.
